[Update] Mississippi Small Cattle Group Initiative

Tuesday 16 April 2024

The Mississippi Small Cattle Group (MSSCG) launched its spring herd health initiative on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Allen McReynolds Farm in Louisville, Mississippi. This cattle initiative was formalized in the latter part of 2023. This initiative will explore the balance of economics and conservation by educating and training Black cattlemen on herd health. We believe herd health has been overlooked with a detrimental financial loss in revenue to black cattlemen in Mississippi. Veterinarians Dr. Harold Necomb and Dr. Llewellyn Peyton will provide technical support. Cows and calves received vaccinations and were drenched to control internal and external parasites. Over fifty animals were vaccinated and castrated at McReynolds Farms. MSSCG performed identical health tasks at Terry Moore Cattle Farm in Goodman, MS, on Monday, April 15, 2024. According to Allen, this process will continue over the next few months. There are eight more farms to be served.
