Planting Watermelons

Tractor

The Winston County Self Help Cooperative staff planted watermelon plants through our Leafy Green Project on April 24th, 2024.  Alonzo Miller and I followed the process below:

  1. Till the ground to loosen the soil, establish the rows, and integrate fertilizer.
  2. Pour 8-8-8 and cottonseed meal (excellent nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium sources) into the dug rows.
  3. Use the tractor to cover the fertilizer with soil.
  4. Plant the watermelon plants in the ground.

By cultivating these watermelon plants, we aim to address food insecurity and promote self-sufficiency in the community.
