The holiday season is in full throttle. I witnessed yards adorned with Christmas decorations in Mississippi and Louisiana. We are less than ten days from celebrating Thanksgiving 2024. The other day, I heard three individuals discussing their Thanksgiving menu. This conversation prompted the Winston County Self Help Cooperative membership and me to encourage you to support local farmers and farmers’ markets in your area. Farmers are the backbone of our food supply; therefore, we encourage you to purchase locally-grown fruits and vegetables from individuals you know. When you purchase from local farmers, you support your children’s schools and county governments directly. Your buying power from local farmers helps sustain landownership and allows our children to enjoy the natural resources. You can call your extension office to identify local farmers and farmers’ markets in your community.
