The Winston County Self Help Cooperative (WCSHC) held a prescribed fire workshop on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 10 A.M., in collaboration with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP).
Allen McReynolds (WCSHC) welcomed everyone in as Mr. Malone Buchanan (Standing Pine, LLC) took the stage to explain the concept of prescribed fire: “A prescribed fire is the controlled use of fire to achieve forest management objectives. It can reduce hazardous fuel levels, control unwanted vegetation, improve visibility, and improve wildlife habitat.”
Next, James Shannon with the Mississippi State Extension discussed fire and forest management. Forest management involves a deliberate, planned, prescribed burn for specific areas within the forest under controlled circumstances. This control will help reduce wildlife risk, improve habitat, and promote healthy forest vegetation with regeneration.
Then, James Callicutt joined Mr. Shannon on the topic of wildlife management. Having a prescribed burn can manage wildlife by opening spaces for them to travel and feed. This space can stimulate the germination of seeds for many species and provide forage, soft mast, and seeds for birds, mammals, and reptiles.
Lastly, Mr. John Gruchy with MDWFP discussed executing a prescribed burn and the sources for assistance in burning. He explained that wind speed and humidity play a huge factor in burning. They prefer east winds and humidity levels between 30% to 50%. He also discussed the importance of smoke screening, which helps the smoke to disperse without causing health or safety hazards.
If you want to learn more about controlled burning, numerous sources of assistance are available. These include the Mississippi Forest Commission, the United States Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) or Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), MDWFP-Fire on the Forty, and the US Forest Service. These organizations can provide guidance and support for your burning needs.
This day was a success! The WCSHC provided grilled chicken, potato salad, baked beans, and assorted cakes. Thank you to the MSU Extension and the MDWFP for your partnership!
