Winston County Self Help Cooperative pushed forward by uplifting and shining a light on forgotten communities. This extraordinary organization was chartered in 1985. WCSHC’s maiden voyage focused on providing technical aid to limited resource farmers in Eastern Mississippi. WCSHC continues its oath today with a strategic plan of action. The co-op current portfolio of services includes youth development, community health, finance, and farm development.

WCSHC retains an umbrella of partners to help fortify life in rural America. As the co-op operations expanded in 1997, Frank Taylor, Team Leader, connected with Roger Jones, Heifer International-South Central Director. This connection proved to be pivotal in the success of WCSHC. Frank started attending the tri-states meetings across Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Frank structured unfathomable relationships with individuals from within the tri-state. The co-op received a 74,500 startup grant in 2001. WCSHC purchased heifers, bulls, and equipment. Frank’s attendance and participation in the meetings scripted a template for WCSHC’s Heifer Project success. Frank said, “We learned the art of the pass-on ceremony and the skills to identify internal issues with group members.” WCSHC posthumously thanked Matthews Moore, Emmitt, and Thelma Muse for sharing their knowledge and leadership with project participants.

The Winston County Self Help Cooperative’s Heifer Project continues to bless families. James Carter received two heifers through WCSHC’s Heifer Project in 2025. James is scheduled to receive three more heifers in 2027. Frank said, “WCSHC members continue to be appreciative to Heifer International for the start-up grant. This noble gift has changed lives and created an infamous amount of dollars for rural Mississippians.” Visit wcshc.com for more information.
