MSSCG and WCSHC’s Cattle Health Initiative

The Mississippi Small Cattlemen Group and the Winston County Self Help Cooperative delivered vaccinations and other services to three herds in Holmes County, MS. Terry Moore and Walter Jackson’s Cattle Farms received services on Thursday, November 14, 2024. On this day, more than 90 heads of cattle moved through the squeeze chute. Dr. Llewelyn Peyton, a Veterinarian, and his team members administered a variety of health checks and vaccinations.

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, this team of cattlemen traversed to Herman Williams Cattle Farm. This Idyllic Farm, located on Highway 17 north of Lexington, MS, has a sizable cattle herd, requiring more workforce and time. However, this experienced team of cattlemen was prepared for today’s task and ready to fulfill their mission.

Allen McReynolds, one of the team members, said, “We are helping small cattle farmers access needed health services to increase profitability from their herds. In the past, most of these cattlemen would not vaccinate their herds due to the cost factor. This health initiative has generated more dollars through the sales of healthy cattle. They are growing and producing healthier cattle by participating in this health initiative.”

We thank Michael Truclair for developing and bringing this initiative to fruition. This initiative has been a massive benefit for small cattle farmers in Mississippi. This health initiative has created enormous dividends for these individuals and their families within two years. Michael’s insightfulness is developing a culture of awareness for these cattlemen to manage their herds with an instituted health maintenance plan. This collective experience should propel these cattlemen to engage and learn other techniques to improve their overall farm operations.
