As I walked into the conference room, the atmosphere was already filled with energy and inspiration. The youth segment was in full swing, and one by one, young leaders stood to introduce themselves, sharing their college plans and intended majors. It was a moment filled with hope and vision for the future of agriculture.
Among them was Samuel Brown, a standout star and recipient of the prestigious 1890 Scholarship. This full-ride scholarship covers his college expenses and secures him a post-graduation job. Samuel committed to majoring in agriculture to qualify—an industry that sustains the world. The scholarship also includes a remarkable $10,000 award to help him launch his own business, empowering him to realize his dreams. As Samuel shared his journey, it was clear that agriculture isn’t just about farming; it’s about cultivating land, lives, and legacies.
The conference continued with an inspiring update from Ms. Eloris Speight, Executive Director of the Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Policy Research Center at Alcorn State University. Ms. Speight highlighted the Policy Research Center’s critical work in advocating for socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers (SDFR). She underscored their success and influence in the 2018 Farm Bill, which includes provisions directly benefiting SDFR and the 1890 community. Her insights illuminated the importance of policy in driving equity and sustainability in agriculture.
The Mississippi Minority Farmers Alliance (MMFA) further elevated the conference with a dynamic speaker lineup. Dr. Cindy Ayers-Elliott, Project Liaison for USDA Risk Management, delivered an empowering message. She likened planting seeds in the soil to planting ideas in the minds of young people, emphasizing how both have the potential to grow into something transformative—a future filled with fresh vegetables and innovative scholars.
Joining her were other visionaries such as M. Darrell Tennie, CEO of The Tennie Group; Mr. Thaddaus Dawson, Jr., Founder of the 10K Minority Appraisers Foundation; and Dr. Timothy Ayankojo, each bringing a wealth of knowledge and passion. Their presentations collectively ignited a spark among the landowners, farmers, and ranchers in attendance. The central message was clear: resources and support are available to help individuals thrive in every facet of agriculture.
This conference was more than an event—it was a call to action. It reminded all participants of the boundless opportunities within agriculture and the importance of nurturing the land and the next generation of leaders. From policy updates to personal stories, the program inspired hope and offered practical tools to empower a stronger, more sustainable future for all involved.
