Impactful Delinquent Property Taxes Meeting

Friday 09 August 2024

The Winston County Self Help Cooperative (WCSHC) held a critical meeting on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, with a laser focus on the pressing issue of delinquent property taxes. The primary objective was to urgently alert residents about the importance of paying their property taxes, especially the delinquent taxes from 2021, to prevent the county from auctioning their properties in the upcoming tax sale.

The WCSHC team invited members to bring copies of the local newspaper, Winston County Journal, to browse the list of delinquent property taxes. They were encouraged to call their loved ones, friends, and acquaintances on the list to remind them to pay their 2021 taxes in full by August 23, 2024.

It’s crucial to understand that if a homeowner has not paid their property taxes since 2021, their property is in jeopardy. However, the power to prevent this lies in our hands. By paying the back taxes, we can avoid a lien being placed on our property. The next tax sale, scheduled for Monday, August 26, 2024, will be conducted online at gov. ease. As Mr. Taylor pointed out, ‘Grown folks buy what they want, not what they need.’ Today, we need to take charge and protect our property from potential buyers.

During the meeting, we also discussed the changes in organizational leadership. With heavy hearts, we acknowledged the passing of Ms. Jean Harper, who spearheaded the youth program. We will always remember Ms. Harper’s dedication to engaging the youth and creating impactful outreach activities for the community’s youth. In her place, Mayla Odom has been appointed to continue Ms. Harper’s legacy and will now oversee the collection of dues and the program’s mission. We have complete confidence in Mayla’s abilities to carry forward the success of the youth program.

Moreover, Frank Taylor underscored the significance of community health. He highlighted that September is Prostate Awareness Month. He invited WCSHC members to join the Carroll County Men in Black and Blue Community Health Admission. This Annual Health Screening on September 21, 2024, at the J.Z. George High School in North Carrollton, MS, offers crucial health checks such as blood pressure, prostate screening, blood sugar levels, and more. This health initiative, a testament to the Cooperative’s commitment to its members’ well-being, is a valuable opportunity to safeguard our health.

Overall, the meeting reminded us of the WCSHC’s dedication to financial and physical health, aiming to support and uplift the community in multiple ways.
