On February 12, 2025, Black Sustainability, Inc. hosted its second annual Save Rural America Conference via Zoom. Justin Nickelson, BSI Event Specialist, warmly welcomed attendees and introduced Raina Turner-Greenlea, the Executive Director of BSI. Raina expressed deep gratitude for WCSHC and inspired all participants to tap into the invaluable resources and wisdom of those who forged paths before us. She passionately shared BSI’s mission and vision while addressing the plight of black farmers in America. Raina left us reflecting on the profound loss encountered when we turned away from the land, highlighting the significant impact of the great migration. She cautioned, “Be careful what is left behind,” and urged us to “reclaim and heal,” particularly our cherished rural lands.
Raina proudly introduced the first guest speaker, Mr. Willard Tillman from Oklahoma Historical Research Project, Inc. Mr. Tillman inspired the audience by discussing the importance of legacy and the invaluable lessons learned from rural communities. He shed light on the challenges black farmers face while highlighting the opportunities and innovative solutions he and his dedicated staff are implementing to empower them.
Justin guided participants through the valuable NRCS programs and services available to them at their fingertips. He illuminated the ranking process following their application submission, highlighting the benefits available to historically underserved farmers and ranchers.
Kenya Crumel of the National Black Food and Justice Alliance motivated attendees with her presentation on transformative land stewardship. She highlighted the vital initiatives her organization is championing to empower landowners to attain and retain their land. Through innovative opportunities, the Alliance makes land accessible to all, fostering an inclusive future. Lastly, she emphasized the power of collaboration, outlining essential “collective considerations” for working effectively as a united force.
This conference was truly empowering. It inspired us to cherish rural land, equipped us with essential tools to overcome challenges, and united us in our pursuit of greater achievements. The WCSHC team expresses heartfelt gratitude to BSI for facilitating such an enriching experience.
