“Carroll County Men in Black and Blue’s Health Fair was a remarkable event,” exclaimed Claum Elam, Carroll County’s president. “We want to convey thanks and appreciation for the community support. We had vendors from the Mississippi Department of Health, G. A. Carmichael Health Division, Winona Hospital staff, and other health practitioners.” Participants engaged and received numerous tests for prostate, hypertension, glucose, dental, and other undiagnosed health ailments hampering rural Mississippians. This group of health professionals provided their skills and time at no cost to the organization.
We want to thank the Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation, based in Ruleville, MS. This center is named in honor of Civil Rights Activist Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer. (I will encourage our readers to research and learn more about Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer’s journey to enhance life for Blacks and other poor people in the United States of America.) Additionally, we want to applaud the founder & CEO of the foundation, Mrs. Freddie-White Johnson, for allowing families to extend legacies. Also, we will highlight Stephanye Peeples, one of the foundation’s valuable team members. Stephanye dispenses needed services to the communities and works directly with numerous health groups across the Mississippi Delta region, to raise the awareness of unmet health disparities.
Winston County Self Help Cooperative staff member Frank Taylor participated in this phenomenal health event. Frank reiterated the WCSHC’s mantra of saving rural America: “The process of life starts with health maintenance. “
WCSHC thanks Claum, Stephanye, and others for creating this health venue. WCSHC will continue collaborating with Carroll County Men in Black and Blue Organization. J. Z. George High School Gym served as the host site for this educational health event in North Carrollton, MS.
