On Saturday, April 11, 2026, WCSHC hosted the Coffeeville/Calhoun Program at Bruce High School in Bruce, Mississippi. Dr. Joy Armstrong warmly welcomed the students along with the Winston County Self Help Cooperative team. Following the welcome, the WCSHC team introduced themselves to the students.
The program began with an icebreaker led by Ms. Pamela OBryant. She asked the students if they had ever heard of hydroponics. Only two students raised their hands, and they received a small prize for participating. The students were then introduced to the concept of hydroponics, a soil-free, water-based method of growing plants in which nutrients are delivered directly through the water. The students had the opportunity to plant their own seeds using this method.

As the program continued, Ms. Emma Goss and Ms. Arlexis Yarbrough demonstrated how to plant seeds using traditional soil methods. Ms. Yarbrough explained that the key ingredients for a successful crop are time, location, and preparation. The students were very excited to learn both the hydroponics method and the traditional way of planting with soil.

After discussing the different planting methods, the students were also introduced to various career paths, colleges, and universities they could pursue further their education. Overall, it was a great day focused on empowering and encouraging students with valuable knowledge for their future.
