WCSHC Members Attend 34th ASFC

The 34th Annual Small Farmers Conference (ASFC) convened on Monday, September 22, 2025, in Greenville, MS, at Harlow’s Casino Resort & Spa—theme: “11 Enhancing & Sustaining the Small Farmer through Entrepreneurship, Innovation, & Technology. Hosted by the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences of Alcorn State University in Lorman, MS. The Conference highlighted the invocation and resilience of Mississippi’s small farmers. It showcases the key role that farmers play in feeding our communities and sustaining our state’s economy. An array of informative breakout sessions was presented, such as: Leafy Green Production & Harvesting. The speakers discuss production practices, crop maintenance, and post-harvest handling of leafy vegetables. Common insect pests and diseases affecting vegetable crops were also discussed. The speaker for the agriculture-Best Management Practices through Livestock and Trees breakout session addressed a sustainable land use approach that combines livestock, trees, and crops to improve productivity, biodiversity, and resilience in herd management.

A networking reception concluded the day with live music by Variety from Cleveland, MS. The conference convenes on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, and will visit numerous outdoor learning sites. Sites include Extension Research & Technology Center in Mount Bayou, MS. At this site, participants will learn about effective crop and soil management strategies to maximize production and yield. They will also become familiar with Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Participants visiting the Washington County Convention Center Area’s site in Greenville, MS, gained valuable insights into livestock production and animal management. Hands-on demonstration on cattle handling, administering vaccinations, deworming, trimming goat hooves, healthy tips and management practices will be featured. Women in Business and Entrepreneurs Showcase was presented at the Washington Convention Center site. Women will receive resources to help them grow, become more visible, and have access to the support needed to take their businesses to the next level. The day will conclude with a Farmer’s Award Banquet. The last day of the conference, Wednesday, September 24, 2025, will conclude with the Tennie Agriculture Group that specializes in tax accounting services tailored for farmers, ranchers, and agribusinessmen and women. They provided valuable insights to assist in making informed financial decisions. The complexities of Heirs’ property were discussed along with emphasis on understanding the laws to ensure a successful outcome. An array of farm equipment is also on display. The conference is packed with innumerable information and networking opportunities.
