WCSHC Final Collard Greens Harvest

Friday 12 December 2025

The Winston County Self Help Cooperative’s Leafy Greens Project feeds families across central Mississippi in 2025. Our greens crop exceeded expectations, accordingly to Frank Taylor, WCSHC Team Leader. “I want to pay homage to Rev. Alonzo Miller for managing the crop. He worked in conjunction with Dr. Richard Moncrief and Valerie Smith to produce a bountiful crop. This trio transplanted the collards on August 28, 2025. The collard greens crop encountered drought conditions in the early parts of October. Alonzo alleviated this problem by deploying an irrigation system. He installed a timer on the system to ensure the plants received water promptly.

Additionally, Alonzo allocated a specified formula of liquid fertilizer through the irrigation system to boost growth. The first harvest occurred on Monday, October 13, 2025. The harvest team consisted of Emma Goss, Arlexis Cunningham-Yarbrough, Ethel (Mae) Carter, and Mayla Odom. We convey thanks to this foursome for harvesting and packing 450 bags of greens over this period of time. The Winston County Self-Help Cooperative fulfilled its mission of helping save rural America by donating the greens to needy families and others in the community.  Today, Friday, December 12, 2025, may be the last harvest due to the impending cold weather arrival. Frank concluded that “we are looking forward to the 2026 cropping season.”
