The Winston County Self Help Cooperative (WCSHC) and the Mississippi Small Cattle Group (MSSCG) delivered technical assistance to Ms. Nettie Reid in Lena, MS, on Monday, June 3, 2024, at 9:00 am. WCSHC Team Members Allen McReynolds and Frank Taylor worked jointly on this mission to assist Ms. Reid.
Allen indicated that Ms. Nettie hosted a field day for WCSHC in 2019. “We were thoroughly impressed with her charisma and tenacity in creating a formidable cattle farm. I admire her fortitude in developing this healthy herd of cattle. She is the principal operator at 87 years old. She drives the tractor, repairs the fences, feeds the cattle, and manages the farm without ‘can’t’ being in her vernacular.” Her story is a shining example of the resilience and determination that can be found in our community.
Frank Taylor exhaled as he watched Ms. Nettie effortlessly gather the cattle on Monday morning. “She gently barked words to steer the cows into lanes.”
Dr. Peyton and his team waited patiently to administer vaccinations and castrate 28 heads of cattle. Ms.Nettie conveyed appreciation to WCSHC and MSSCG for allocating the needed services.
