OM Day

On June 2, 2025, the Winston County Self Help Cooperative hosted a heartfelt celebration in honor of Omeria Dotson and Mary Hannah. This day, known as OM Day, serves as a tribute to the powerful legacies of women who have shaped communities through teaching, nurturing, and unwavering perseverance.

Omeria Dotson and Mary Hannah were foundational pillars of the Cooperative, serving as two of its four founding members. Their commitment, wisdom, and determination helped shape the cooperative’s mission and impact. The celebration highlighted their lasting influence and the vital roles they played as catalysts for progress within Winston County and beyond. Their vision lives on in the programs they helped build and in the lives they touched through their tireless advocacy for land ownership, sustainable farming, and rural development.

In addition to honoring Mrs. Dotson and Ms. Hannah, OM Day celebrated all women. From mothers and caregivers to teachers and community organizers, the event acknowledged the many forms of leadership that women exhibit across generations. The celebration featured tributes from Cooperative members, community leaders, and family members who shared personal stories highlighting the honorees’ resilience, leadership, and compassion. The WCSHC recognized Rosie Harris, Janice Hopkins, Elemetra Patterson, Alice Perryman, Debra Sykes, Christine Waldrip, and Nettie Reid, all of whom have shown great commitment to uplifting the community. Guests enjoyed music, food, and fellowship as they reflected on the enduring strength of women who stand as quiet giants in the movements for justice, equity, and community advancement.

OM Day is more than a commemorative occasion; it is a call to action and acknowledgment. It serves as a reminder that the contributions of women are foundational to our collective growth and success. The Winston County Self Help Cooperative is proud to uphold this tradition, honoring the spirit of Mrs. Dotson, Ms. Hannah, and countless others who have uplifted and empowered those around them.
