Winston County Self Help Cooperative (WCSHC) and the Mississippi Producers Agricultural Group (MSPAG) work together on our annual delinquent property taxes campaign. Our shared objective is to prevent land loss due to delinquent property taxes. This mission carries significant weight and directly impacts generational wealth, stability, and our community. One part of our collaborative efforts is conducting weekly Zoom meetings and increasing the frequency as we approach the August 23, 2024, deadline. These meetings serve as a platform to spread awareness, reinforcing our collective responsibility to our community.
Recently, MSPAG hosted a delinquent property taxes Zoom on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at 7 pm. Sheronda Marion orchestrated the Zoom. She introduced Michael Walton, Yalobusha County’s newly elected Tax Assessor and Collector. Michael thanked MSPAG for inviting him to participate and share tidbits about his responsibilities as an elected official. “We collect taxes on real and personal properties. The state of Mississippi set the millage rate with assistance from the Mississippi State Extension Service. Yalobusha County’s Delinquent Property Taxes auction occurred in April. We have 13,000 parcels of land in Yalobusha County, which is considered small. Lafayette County has more than 35,000 parcels to be evaluated.”
Michael also provided information about real and personal property. “A modular home or trailer is considered as personal property. They are not affixed to the soil. My staff works diligently to inform individuals to pay their levies before the ultimate deadline.”
“We want your payment and not your land. Pay your property taxes now.” – Michael Walton, Tax Assessor and Collector
