Climate-Smart Ag Workshop

Friday 27 September 2024

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, Mr. Allen Mcreynolds of the Winston County Self Help Cooperative hosted a SmartAgGro event. Greg Hudson, founder and executive director of SmartAgGro, brought the message. Mr. Hudson introduced the SmartAgGro Climate Smart Program, an initiative to provide critical support to underserved producers. The program aims to help farmers overcome the resource limitations that often hinder their ability to expand and thrive. Hudson emphasizes that farming isn’t just about planting crops; it’s about managing various challenges, from soil health to market access.

Farmers will receive support such as soil and animal testing, cash incentives, management tools, and enhanced market resources through the SmartAgGro Climate Smart Program. These elements are crucial for increasing productivity and sustainability, helping farmers grow their business. Hudson also stressed the importance of this program for regions like Mississippi, with 82% of the state considered a food desert. By joining this program, underserved farmers can access the resources they need to stay competitive and contribute to the region’s food security. The thirteen farmers who attended the event applied for the Climate Smart Program during the event. This initiative represents a significant opportunity for producers to get the support they need and deserve to thrive in today’s demanding agriculture landscape.
